Philosophy of ART OF PAINTING

My teacher did not teach me to paint, he taught me to see. His teacher in turn taught him which was passed on to him by his teacher. This is the old world process called apprenticeship. There are no secrets or formulas in art of painting… only a journey which involves much mileage or hard work. So we need to honor the journey… No one owns this knowledge… no secrets, no formulas…

Art of painting is the harmony and contrast of color, drawing, form, design, and texture.

Art of painting is specific in its goals of continually learning and growing. Rules and formulas are minimal. Every situation, every scene being painted is unique. The goal is to “see” and understand the relationship of color, value and temperature present. This is painting and the art there of – art of painting. The eye must be trained to see this sometimes subtle harmony.

Sometimes the journey of Art of painting is more about finding out what not to do, than what to do.

Sergei Bongart, my teacher said, “a magnificent likeness has nothing to do with art of painting.

Art of Painting – is very simple to state but very difficult to master. Art of painting is about color and its relationship to each other. Not local color – or the color the object is thought to be (i.e. apple is red sky is blue, tree is green) but its relationship to other colors and their harmony. Color cannot be copied!  You must produce the relationship between colors.  This is art of painting. 

It is very much like music, a number of notes come together to form a harmony, a melody. Which can be developed into music – a symphony of beautiful notes coming together to harmonize with each other. Just as colors harmonize together to become a painted image.

It is not the quantity or amount of color we are talking about it is the quality of color that is important!  QUALITY over quantity.

Art of painting is about color harmony yes… but also about DRAWING which is about Proportion, Perspective, and Placement, of the Pieces of light and shadow. All these elements come together to make FORM. Art of painting is about describing this FORM with color!

DESIGN, COMPOSITION and TEXTURE are also important elements and connected to art of painting.

When the student begins to see each color in true relationship to the rest….He becomes a painter. Everything begins and ends here; this is art of painting.
