The Setting: My neighborhood - just out my studio door, early one summer morning as the sun rose.

The View: My neighbor's red barn surrounded by trees and grass.

This location was chosen because it has simple shapes and a simple composition which allows the viewer to focus on the challenges of plein air painting and the foundations of Art of Painting.

As the foundations of plein air painting are presented in a step-by-step manner, artists will "see" how to simplify complex landscapes into "simple pieces" dealing with color, value and temperature. One must capture the color relationship moment by moment - for the scene will quickly change as the light and shadows move.

Working outdoors will train one to work with haste and to be spontaneous. This speed will be useful when working indoors; it will help the indoor work to not be too labored.
